In 2012, Colin Knight Colbert formed CKC Properties and acquired 1 Magazine Street, a classic Freedman’s Cottage that had fallen into disarray over the years. Underneath the synthetic shutters and metal awnings, and despite the rotted structure, Colin could visualize the house being restored to reveal the charm and history that drew him to Charleston in the beginning.
After a 4-month renovation, the vision came to life and the project was awarded the Carolopolis Award from the Preservation Society of Charleston. The home was sold prior to completion and CKC Properties began to move on to other projects. For the next two years, Colin turned his focus from single family home restorations to urban infill projects that allowed multiple rental units and long-term holdings opportunities. In some instances, these “infill” projects included the historically correct restoration of an existing structure on the property. Development opportunities such as this provide high quality housing to the downtown Charleston market in a low impact manner, as emphasized in Charleston’s Century V Plan.
While still actively pursuing multi-family housing opportunities, commercial property development opportunities in downtown Charleston have been introduced into the CKC Properties portfolio.
The future growth of CKC Properties will be realized in the following areas:
- The historic preservation of notable structures in the core business district of Charleston for adaptation to functional, efficient and creative office environments.
- The creation of unique work spaces to meet the needs of the innovative and expanding technology companies within Charleston’s Digital Corridor.
- The expansion of CKC Properties high quality residential portfolio within the Charleston Peninsula.
